Department of English

The English Language and Literature Speciality of East China Normal University (ECNU), which was the predecessor of the English Department,was set up in 1951. The Department started to offer an M.A. program in 1981 and a Ph.D. program in 1998. Rated as the Shanghai Characteristic Speciality and the National Characteristic Specialityrespectively by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and China’s Ministry of Education, it is nationally renowned for its fine academic tradition as well as its solid and profound foundation for disciplinary development. The Department of English of ECNU, as one of the most significant English teacher education bases in China, has inherited the rich tradition in English teacher education and has been a leader in China’s reform of English teacher education. In 2014, the comprehensive course reform program on English teaching major of the Department, which aimed at innovating the traditional English teacher education system in China, was approved as a key comprehensive reform program of the Ministry of Education.


The Department of English has published many academic monographs and textbooks that have strong influences across the country, such as several colleges and universities textbooks rated as the National Planned Textbooks, includingCollege English, Integrated Skills of English and Listen This Way, which have won First Prize of the National Excellent Teaching Material for Colleges and Universities. The Department has made prominent contribution to enhancing the foreign language teaching in China. High-quality academic articles are constantly published by the faculty in academic journals of SSCI, A&HCI and CSSCI. Furthermore, many teachers have been the leading experts in numerous provincial and national scientific research projects, and have won scientific research awards and teaching achievement awards at provincial and national levels a great many times. Two courses for undergraduate students at the English Department -- Integrated Skills of English and English Pronunciation -- have been successively selected as Shanghai Quality Curriculum and National Quality Curriculum. After years of endeavor, a relatively complete discipline system has been successfully established, covering Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies and Literature & Cultural Studies (England, America and Australia).


The English faculty has boasted quite a few very influential scholars, such Fang Zhong, Ge Chuangui, Xu Yanmou, Zhou Xuliang, Sun Dayu, Zuo Huanqi, and Huang Yuanshen.


Currently there are about 600 undergraduate students, over 100 M.A. students and Ph.D. candidates and about 500 in-service MEd (Master of Education) postgraduates. The students enjoy a wide range of employment opportunities, including positions in colleges and universities, secondary schools, publishing houses, broadcasting stations, television stations, government agencies, state-owned enterprises, single-invested enterprises and joint venture enterprises.


The B.A. program offers the following major courses: English Intensive Reading, English Extensive Reading, Listening, Pronunciation, Speaking, Writing, Grammar, E-C Translation, Integrated Skills of English, C-E Translation, Interpretation, English Literature, American Literature, Introduction to Linguistics, The Outline of the UK, the USA and Australia, English Teaching and Learning, etc. The M.A. program includes the following major courses: Cultural Theory and Popular Culture, Western Intellectual Tradition, Twentieth Century Western Critical Theory, Classical Western Critical Theory, Modern Drama, American Literature and Culture, English Literature, Australian Literature, China-Australian Relationships, Australian Cultural Studies, The Post-war International Relations, Translation Theories, Introduction to Translatology, Theoretical Linguistics, The Philosophy of Language, Pragmatics, Phonology, Contemporary Linguistics and so on.
